The Philosophy and the Humanist Connection courses try to help students become philosophical critics. With that in mind, we explore some of the basic areas of humanist philosophy: what is humanism’s view of human nature, of nature, of culture, of religion, and of science. We ask ourselves the Socratic question: what do we mean by humanist philosophy in these areas and how well does it stand up to challenge?
Within these courses we’ll be looking at some of the basic themes of humanism – human being, nature, religion, reason and the sciences, democracy and education. We’ll begin each section with representative statements from one or more humanist documents. Later on, we’ll draw conclusions about the humanist project and where our philosophic adventure takes us.
