Clinical Pastoral Education Program

Compassionate Care, Reflective Practice, Human-Centered Leadership

Clinical Pastoral Education Program, an educational offering of the AHA Center for Education Humanist Studies Program, prepares professional to provide compassionate, evidence-based informed spiritual care in today’s diverse religious, Humanist, spiritual, and secular communities.

Grounded in the Humanist tradition, our program is guided by the values of dignity, reason, compassion, ethical responsibility, and respect for every person’s inherent worth. Our educational approach equips students to provide exceptional spiritual care wile engaging thoughtfully with the full diversity of traditional religious, Humanist, spiritual, and secular worldviews they will encounter in clinical and community settings.

We welcome students from Humanist, traditional religious, interfaith, secular, and other philosophical traditions who are committed to accompanying people through some of life’s most significant experiences. Through ACPE Clinical Pastoral Education, students integrate rigorous clinical practice with reflective learning to develop the self-awareness, knowledge, and professional competencies essential for compassionate and ethical care.

Our Humanist Approach

Humanism affirms the inherent dignity and worth of every person and encourages thoughtful reflection, ethical responsibility, compassion, and a commitment to human flourishing. These principles shape every aspect of our educational philosophy.

Students learn to cultivate authentic presence, deep listening, critical self-reflection, and cultural humility while providing spiritual care for individuals whose beliefs, identities, and life experiences may differ from their own. By learning within a Humanist framework, students develop the capacity to offer compassionate, respectful, and ethically grounded care across the full spectrum of religious traditions—including Humanist—spiritual, secular communities. Throughout this program, Humanism is recognized and affirmed as a religious tradition.

Our goal is not simply to prepare competent chaplains, but reflective practitioners who embody Humanist values while serving every person with empathy, integrity, and respect.
